Wuhan University Medical Education Reform Project (WUMER)

On the afternoon of June 3, the University of Chicago President Robert Zimmer and his entourage visited the Vice President and Dean of the medical school Tang Qizhu along with Jonathan Lio from WUMER. Also present at the meeting were Vice Ministers of Medicine Yu Baoping, Xiong Wei, the head of the International Exchange Department, the Institute of Science and Technology Development, and teachers and student representatives from the Basic Medical College, the First Clinical College, and the Second Clinical College.

Tang Qizhu said that he hoped the two sides will further expand channels of communication between teachers and students and contribute to the causes of medical education and human health. The teachers and students who participated in the medical cooperation project spoke passionately about their personal experiences.  Robert Zimmer said that cooperation between the two sides in the medical field for 11 years has laid a solid foundation for future collaboration.

Since 2008, Wuhan University School of Medicine has sent more than 100 faculty to the United States for 3-6 months of teaching and training activities. The faculty participating in education reform have a total of more than 100 approved teaching research topics, and published a total of 220 papers in medical journals at home and abroad, of which 2 won the first prize of 100 excellent papers in national medical education. Wuhan University and the University of Chicago jointly held the “International Medical Education Forum and Seminar” in 2012 and 2017 respectively, with more than 400 representatives from the United States, South Korea, Australia and domestic medical colleges.
