Renslow Sherer

Director

Dr. Sherer has been a primary caregiver for people living with HIV since 1982. He is an internationally known expert in HIV and related infectious diseases who founded the first HIV clinic in Chicago at Cook County Hospital in 1982, the AIDS Foundation of Chicago in 1985, and then he led the clinical team which designed the CORE Center, a model ambulatory facility for HIV and related infectious diseases which opened in Chicago in October, 1998. He has numerous international publications on the clinical and social impact of the HIV pandemic. Dr. Sherer was a member of the US HHS HIV/AIDS Treatment Guideline Panel from 1996-2010 and the ‘Free ART’ Guideline Panel in China from 2004-2006.

From 1997 – 2003, Dr. Sherer was an Associate Professor of Medicine at Rush University, and he became a Professor of Medicine in the Section of Infectious Diseases and Global Health in the Department of Medicine at the University of Chicago in 2003. Dr. Sherer was the William B. Walsh fellow and Senior Technical Advisor for Project HOPE from 2003-2008. Dr. Sherer has led HIV treatment and training collaborations worldwide, he has implemented micro-credit and health education programs for orphans and families with HIV in sub-Saharan Africa and the Americas, he has led HIV prevention and stigma reduction programs around the world, and he has led HIV/TB and TB prevention and control programs in Africa and China. He is currently leading a ten year program to support undergraduate and graduate medical education reform at Wuhan University in China. Dr. Sherer is teaching courses in HIV and global medical education at the Pritzker School of Medicine and a course in Health and Human Rights at the Pozen Family Center for Human Rights at the College. Dr. Sherer holds a Bachelor of Arts from Princeton University and a Doctorate of Medicine from Rush Medical College. Dr. Sherer is the Director of the International HIV Training Center, the Director of the Wuhan University Medical Education Reform Project, and the Director of Medical Education for the Center for Global Health at the University of Chicago.

Associate Director

Dr. Lio is a native of Los Angeles and his grandparents come from China. He graduated from UCLA with a bachelor degree in physiological sciences, completed his medical degree at Loma Linda University and residency training at Johns Hopkins University in internal medicine. He is currently Assistant Professor in the Department of Internal Medicine at the University of Chicago.

Dr. Lio’s interests include residency education in China and faculty development. In addition to working with Wuhan University to create a competency framework for the training of medical doctors, he has been invited to speak at national residency education conferences across China, and has advised the China Medical Board Consortium of Elite Hospitals for Residency Training. Dr. Lio is Co-Director of the International Medical Educators Program at University of Chicago, and is on the faculty steering committee of the UChicago Center in Beijing.

Ivy joined the team since the inception of the WUMER Project in 2008. Her primary role is to serve as the liaison of the Project, bridging the communications among stakeholders in Chicago, Wuhan and other partner institutions.
